By default, the steam overlay does not work with D2. However, after doing some googling one day I found a guide on how to do this. It isn’t mine, and I can’t take credit. However, I can say that it does work. I’ve used this method to get the overlay working with D2 on my laptop and friends. This provides an alternate video option when you do the video test for D2, and doesn’t change Steam, so it won’t mess up the overlay with any other games. Now, why would you want this? For me, the benefit was the chat box that keeps an accurate log that won’t disappear when you leave or join a game and voice chat feature that comes with steam, which has a push to talk option also. I know there are plenty of other programs to do this, but I already had steam and I like it, so it’s a plus. Now I can talk to all my D2 friends without having to type all the chat commands and crap. I hope others find it useful.

Two years ago, secret club member @floesen reported a remote code execution flaw affecting all source engine games. It can be triggered through a Steam invite. This has yet to be patched, and Valve is preventing us from publicly disclosing it. There are heaps of nods to Diablo-likes, including loot hoarding minions, rarity tiers, and classes that you can min-max whichever way you want. Related: when is Borderlands 3 coming to Steam? I checked Steam but its not on there. Does anyone know where I can download it from? And is it free or does it still cost money? I know some games that are dated can be free and stuff so I was just wondering. I never played Diablo before and I just thought maybe I should pick it up and try. Diablo ® II: Lord of Destruction ® is being downloaded! If your download didn't start, try again.

I know this is a problem that can be frustrating with older games, as they are not using a renderer that the Steam overlay supports or something. But I’ve found a way to make it work, and for the game to run better as it is.

Diablo 2 Steam
  1. Download the Glide3 to OpenGL Wrapper. This wrapper is perfectly safe and it simulates 3DFX Glide for new graphics cards. The Diablo 2 engine runs best using glide so you can get better game speeds using this. Normally not a problem, but when playing graphic heavy mods like Median XL the slowdown can become a problem if there is a lot going on. Doesn’t hurt anyway.
  2. Install the wrapper. MAKE SURE to read the readme when you download it so you put the files in the right place.
  3. Go to the Diablo 2 folder and run the D2VidTest and select Glide that is now it the selection window.
  4. Right click on diablo2.exe and head to properties. On the Compatibility tab, check disable desktop composition. I don’t have to run as administrator, but you may have to (I’m the admin on my Win7 64 bit system). I also don’t have it set to compatibility mode for anything, but you may also have to set that to XP
  5. Add the game to Steam and it should let you use the overlay in game, be aware that its still 800×600 max resolution, also, you will probably have to set it to this since you changed video modes.
Steam

Worth it if you want to keep a website open or read a guide at the same time you are playing, and so you don’t have to keep alt-tabbing all the time. I feel everyone should use the Glide Wrapper, I’ve noticed my game run so much better using it.

This will allow you to use Steam Link and the Steam Controller.
